Cardiovascular disease kills more people than the next three causes combined. Heart attacks, strokes, heart failure — these are not dramatic, headline-grabbing events in most of the world. Global averages hide enormous regional variation. Africa has a far higher death rate per capita than any other continent, driven by infectious disease, child mortality, and limited healthcare access. Asia accounts for the biggest raw numbers, simply because it holds 60% of the world's population.

Europe's share might surprise you. It punches well above its population weight because it has some of the oldest populations on earth — countries like Italy, Germany, and Japan (counted in Asia here) have median ages above 45. Notice Russia's crude death rate — 14.3 per 1,000 people. That is one of the highest in the world for a major country, driven by an ageing population, high rates of cardiovascular disease, heavy alcohol consumption, and relatively low life expectancy for a high-income nation. How many people die per day by age group
Age is the single strongest predictor of death. The very young and the very old die at vastly higher rates than everyone in between — but the reasons are completely different.

Over half of all daily deaths happen to people aged 70 and above. This is actually a remarkable achievement — a century ago, the distribution looked radically different, with infectious disease and child mortality pushing far more deaths into the younger brackets.

Here is the part of the story that surprises most people. The raw number of daily deaths has been rising — but the death rate per capita has been falling for decades. Both things are true at the same time.

The crude death rate in 1950 was 19.1 per thousand — nearly triple what it is today. What changed? Antibiotics. Vaccines. Clean water. Sanitation. The Green Revolution that ended mass famine in much of Asia. Child mortality plummeted. Maternal mortality fell. Infectious diseases that once killed millions were tamed or eradicated.
But population growth kept pushing the absolute number of deaths higher, and now demographic ageing is taking over. As the enormous generations born in the 1950s and 1960s move into their seventies and eighties, the daily death toll is climbing even as your individual probability of dying in any given year continues to fall.

Deaths versus births — the balance sheet
Death is only half the equation. To understand what is actually happening to the human population, you need to put deaths next to births.

The world adds roughly 215,000 people per day — the equivalent of a mid-sized city materialising out of thin air every 24 hours. But this growth rate is decelerating. In the 1960s, the world was adding over 250,000 people per day. The UN projects that by the 2080s, births and deaths will roughly equalise, and global population will plateau around 10.3 billion before beginning a slow decline.
That future is already visible in countries like Japan, South Korea, Italy, and Germany, where deaths outnumber births every single day. These nations are literally shrinking.
Patterns within the day
One question people often ask: is there a time of day when more people die? The answer, supported by decades of hospital records and epidemiological data, is yes.
Deaths cluster in the early morning hours, roughly between 3 AM and 6 AM. This is partly physiological — cortisol and blood pressure follow circadian rhythms, and the body is at its most vulnerable during the late-night dip. Heart attacks, strokes, and respiratory failure all peak in the pre-dawn hours. There is also a smaller secondary peak in the mid-afternoon.
This pattern holds across countries, climates, and causes. It is one of the most consistent findings in mortality research, and it means that of the 170,000 daily deaths, a disproportionate share happen while most of us are asleep.
