How Many People Have Ever Lived on Earth (And How Many Have Died)

An estimated 117 billion humans have ever been born. About 109 billion have died. The 8.1 billion alive today are just 7% of everyone who ever existed.

I was standing in an old churchyard in Yorkshire a few years ago, reading headstones. Most of them were so worn by rain and wind that the names had dissolved into smooth stone — just vague grooves where letters used to be. Some of these graves were three hundred years old. A few were older. And I remember thinking: every single one of these people lived a full life. They had mornings where they did not want to get out of bed. They had meals they enjoyed. Arguments with their neighbours. And now they are just weathered rock in wet grass, and nobody alive remembers their name.

That thought sent me down a rabbit hole that I have not really come back from: how many people have ever existed? How many humans have ever drawn breath, looked up at the sky, and eventually stopped breathing? And how do the 8.1 billion of us walking around right now compare to that total number?

The answers, when you actually sit with them, are staggering. You can watch the number of deaths climbing in real time on our live death counter — but the historical total dwarfs anything you see ticking over on a screen.

The headline number

According to estimates from the Population Reference Bureau (PRB) — the most widely cited source on this question — approximately 117 billion humans have ever been born since the emergence of Homo sapiens roughly 200,000 to 300,000 years ago.

Of those 117 billion, about 109 billion have died.

That leaves roughly 8.1 billion alive today — which means the living represent about 6.9% of all humans who have ever existed.

I want to sit with that for a moment. Nearly 7 out of every 100 humans who have ever lived are alive right now. That number sounds small — and it is — but it is actually the highest this ratio has ever been in human history. For most of our existence as a species, the living were a far tinier fraction of the dead.

A timeline of human population

To understand how we got to 117 billion total births, you need to see how population grew — or rather, how it barely grew at all for most of history, and then exploded.

Look at those numbers carefully. For tens of thousands of years, population growth was glacial. The human population did not reach 1 billion until around 1800. It took roughly 200,000 years to get to that first billion. Then it took just 123 years to reach the second billion (1927). And just 12 years to go from 7 billion to 8 billion (2011 to 2023).

This is not just population growth. It is population growth accelerating — each billion arriving faster than the last. And because more people means more births, the cumulative total of all humans who have ever existed has been growing faster in the last few centuries than in the entire previous history of our species.

How many people died in each era

Here is the part that really gets under your skin. If 117 billion have been born and 109 billion have died, what did all those billions of people die from? And when?

The answer depends heavily on which era you are looking at, because the human experience of death has changed dramatically over time.

The prehistoric era accounts for the largest share of all deaths — roughly 42% of everyone who has ever died. That might seem surprising given the small population sizes, but remember: the prehistoric period lasted for over 190,000 years. Even with tiny populations, that many millennia produce a lot of births and a lot of deaths.

The shift in the final row is dramatic. In the modern era, the leading causes of death are chronic diseases — heart disease, cancer, stroke — rather than infection and famine. This is not because chronic diseases got worse. It is because we got so much better at surviving everything else that we now live long enough for our hearts and cells to wear out. The deadliest centuries

Not all centuries were created equal. Some were far bloodier than others, thanks to the intersection of war, disease, and famine.

The 20th century stands alone. Despite all our advances in medicine, sanitation, and food production, the 1900s produced more violent and catastrophic deaths than any other century in human history. World War II alone killed an estimated 70-85 million people. The Spanish Flu of 1918-1919 killed 50-100 million. Mao Zedong's Great Leap Forward famine killed 30-55 million between 1959 and 1961.

The 14th century, though, might have been worse in proportional terms. The Black Death killed an estimated 30-60% of Europe's population and ravaged large parts of Asia and the Middle East. In absolute numbers, 75-100 million died. But as a share of the global population at the time (around 370-400 million), that is a catastrophe of almost unimaginable scale — roughly one in every four or five humans alive on earth.

Life expectancy through history

One of the most misunderstood statistics in human history is life expectancy. When people hear that prehistoric humans had a life expectancy of 25, they picture everyone dropping dead at 25. That is not what happened.

Life expectancy at birth is an average, and it is heavily dragged down by infant and child mortality. In prehistoric times, nearly half of all children died before age five. If you survived childhood, you had a reasonable chance of reaching 50 or 60. The "average of 25" reflects the horrifying number of babies and toddlers who did not make it — not a world where nobody saw their 30th birthday.

With that caveat, here is how the average has changed:

The jump from 47 in 1900 to 73 today — a gain of 26 years in just over a century — is arguably the single greatest achievement in human history. We added more years to the average human life in the last 125 years than in the previous 200,000.

The ratio of living to dead

Here is a question that philosophers and demographers have both wrestled with: at any given point in history, how did the number of living people compare to the number who had already died?

For almost all of human history, the living were a rounding error compared to the dead. Even in 1 AD, when the Roman Empire was at its peak and the Han Dynasty ruled China, the living represented well under 1% of all humans who had ever existed. By 1900, we had only just crossed 2%.

The explosion happens in the late 20th century. The combination of falling death rates, rising birth rates, and medical advances pushed the living-to-total ratio from under 3% in 1950 to nearly 7% today. We are, right now, living in the most populated moment in the history of our species — and the moment when the living represent the largest share of the total they have ever represented.

The 100 billion graves thought experiment

Let me try to make 109 billion deaths feel real, because the number is so large that it tends to just slide off the brain.

If every person who had ever died was buried in a standard grave — roughly 2.4 metres long and 1.2 metres wide — those graves would cover approximately 313 billion square metres of land. That is 313,000 square kilometres — slightly larger than the entire area of Italy.

If you stacked all 109 billion people end to end, the line would stretch about 185 billion kilometres — roughly 1,236 times the distance from Earth to the Sun. Or about 20 light-years. You could reach the star system Alpha Centauri (4.37 light-years away) and still have enough bodies left over to get more than halfway to Gliese 667 C, a potentially habitable exoplanet.

If every person who ever died stood shoulder to shoulder, they could fill roughly 14 million football pitches.

These are silly exercises in some ways. But they help break through the numbness of large numbers. One hundred and nine billion is not an abstraction. It is every person who ever loved someone, and lost them, and eventually was lost themselves.

Population projections — when will we hit peak living humans?

The world population is still growing, but the growth rate has been declining since the 1960s. The UN's medium-variant projection suggests we will hit a peak somewhere around 10.3 billion in the mid-2080s, after which the global population will begin to decline for the first time in modern history.

The decline will be driven by falling fertility rates. More than half the world's countries already have fertility rates below the replacement level of 2.1 children per woman. South Korea's fertility rate hit 0.72 in 2023 — the lowest ever recorded by any country. Japan, Italy, Spain, China, and much of Eastern Europe are all well below replacement.

This means the ratio of living to dead will eventually start to fall again. After decades of the living claiming an ever-larger share of all humans who ever existed, we will begin to shrink as a percentage of the total once more.

At peak population, assuming cumulative births have reached roughly 126 billion by the mid-2080s, the living would represent about 8.2% of all humans who have ever existed. That may be the highest the ratio ever gets.

What the numbers actually mean

I keep coming back to those headstones in Yorkshire. Every one of those 109 billion dead people was someone. They had a particular face. A particular voice. Most of them were born, lived their entire lives, and died without leaving a single written record that they ever existed. No headstone, no census entry, no photograph. Nothing.

The vast majority of all human experience — the overwhelming majority — is lost. We have historical records covering maybe 5,000 years. Before that, stretching back 200,000 years, there are only bones and tools and cave paintings and silence.

And yet here we are. 8.1 billion strong. The largest cohort of living humans there has ever been, equipped with more knowledge, more medicine, and more capability than any generation before us. We live, on average, nearly three times longer than our prehistoric ancestors. We have eradicated smallpox, the single deadliest infectious disease in human history. We have cut child mortality by over 90% in the last century.
