Deaths Per Second makes global mortality data accessible, understandable, and — most importantly — real.

Our Mission

Every day, roughly 170,000 people die worldwide. That number is easy to read, hard to feel. We built Deaths Per Second to close that gap — to turn abstract statistics into something you can watch, compare, and reflect on.

This is not a morbid project. It is a clarity project. When you see the counter tick, you are not watching numbers — you are witnessing the pace of the one thing every person on earth shares. We believe that awareness of mortality, handled with respect, is one of the most powerful motivators for living well.

Data Sources

All statistics on this site are derived from publicly available data published by authoritative global health organisations:

  • World Health Organisation (WHO) — Global Health Estimates, cause-of-death data, and country-level mortality statistics.
  • United Nations (UN) — World Population Prospects, demographic data, and regional population estimates.
  • World Bank — Life expectancy indicators, crude death rates, and development statistics.

Data is updated periodically as new reports are published. Country and cause-of-death figures reflect the most recent available estimates.

How the Counters Work

The live counters on this site are statistical estimates, not real-time feeds from hospitals or registries. Here is how they work:

  1. We take the annual global death total (approximately 62 million) and divide it by the number of seconds in a year to get a per-second rate (~1.97 deaths per second).
  2. When you load the page, the counter calculates how many seconds have passed since midnight UTC and multiplies by that rate to give you a "deaths today" figure.
  3. The counter updates every second in your browser, incrementing at the statistical rate. No server connection is needed once the page loads.

This means the numbers are a close approximation, not a precise tally. Real-world deaths do not occur at a perfectly constant rate — but at this scale, the statistical model is remarkably close to the aggregate reality.
