Patricio Guzmán spent six decades documenting the political history of Chile, most famously in The Battle of Chile, his three-part chronicle of the period leading up to the 1973 coup. Detained in Santiago's National Stadium after the coup, he went on to make much of his work in exile, including Nostalgia for the Light (2010) and The Pearl Button (2015). He founded the Santiago International Documentary Film Festival in 1997 and received Chile's National Prize for Performing and Audiovisual Arts in 2023. The University of Chile said he died in a hospital in Paris on September 15 at the age of 85, of cardiorespiratory arrest.
