Motor neurone disease
Neale Daniher played 82 games for Essendon and later coached Melbourne in the AFL, but it was his battle with motor neurone disease (MND) that made him a national figure in Australia. After his diagnosis in 2013, he founded the FightMND foundation and raised over $90 million for MND research. His "Big Freeze" events at the MCG — where celebrities slid into an ice pool to raise awareness — became an annual highlight of the AFL season.
