Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner (1973, 1982)
Gordon Johncock won the Indianapolis 500 in 1973 and again in 1982, when he held off Rick Mears by 0.16 seconds in what was then the closest finish in the race's history. He also won the 1976 USAC National Championship and recorded 25 victories and 20 pole positions in 261 Indy car starts, racing against A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti and Johnny Rutherford. He made his final start in 1992 at the age of 55. He died peacefully at his home in South Branch, Michigan, on September 28 at the age of 90.
