Deaths from Hate Crimes & Racial Violence

A data-driven look at lives lost to hate crimes, racially motivated violence, and ethnic persecution. Every number on this page represents a human life ended by prejudice.

Data disclaimer: There is no single authoritative global count of hate crime deaths. Data varies by country, definition, and reporting standards. Many incidents go unreported. We present the best available figures from credible sources, clearly cited. If you spot an error or have better data, please contact us.

The Underreporting Problem

Before looking at the numbers, it is important to understand how incomplete they are. Most hate crimes are never recorded.

Global Trends

Hate crime incidents at record highs

The UNODC reported a 22% increase in hate crimes globally between 2019 and 2021. US hate crime incidents reached three consecutive record-high years (2021–2023) before plateauing in 2024. Canada saw hate crimes double since 2018.

US extremist murders declining (but volatile)

ADL data shows extremist-related murders in the US fell from 32 in 2020 to 13 in 2024, the lowest since 2000. However, 2025 data suggests numbers may be rising again. Individual mass attacks cause sharp spikes in any given year.

Antisemitic and anti-Muslim violence rising

2025 was the deadliest year for antisemitic attacks on the Jewish diaspora since the 1994 Buenos Aires bombing. Anti-Muslim hate crimes in the UK rose 19% in 2024–2025. France saw racial offences nearly double from 1,636 (2022) to 3,144 (2024).

Why This Page Has No Live Counter

Unlike our other pages, we do not display a real-time counter for hate crime deaths. This is a deliberate choice.

No international body systematically tracks hate crime deaths worldwide. Most countries do not record this data at all. Of those that do, severe underreporting means the official numbers capture only a fraction of reality.

Displaying a speculative counter would undermine the credibility that our data-driven approach depends on. Instead, we present the best available data from the sources that do exist, and we are transparent about the gaps. The scale of what goes unmeasured is itself a critical data point.
