Susumu Tonegawa

Susumu Tonegawa won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1987 for discovering the genetic mechanism that produces antibody diversity, essentially explaining how the immune system can create billions of different antibodies from a limited number of genes. His work was fundamental to understanding immunology and laid the groundwork for modern vaccine development and cancer immunotherapy.
