Susumu Tonegawa

Susumu Tonegawa won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1987 for discovering the genetic mechanism that produces antibody diversity — essentially explaining how the immune system can create billions of different antibodies from a limited number of genes. His work was fundamental to understanding immunology and laid the groundwork for modern vaccine development and cancer immunotherapy.
